What happens at fat camp?

Fat camps are typically residential retreats where people struggling to get fit or lose weight come to obtain their weight loss and fitness goals, and do so in an environment that reduces their everyday stress.

At Weight Crafters, our program is designed for adults of all ages and fitness levels to include obese and senior clientele. By setting up an environment that allows people to get away from their everyday routine and focus entirely on losing weight, improving strength, mobility, energy levels and over-all health, we have been able to help our clients achieve great results and turn a new leaf towards a healthier lifestyle.

The combination of our healthy meals, exercises, calorie intake monitoring and focus on overall wellness serve to achieve a maintainable weight loss and fitness regiment. At Weight Crafters, our #1 priority is helping our clients form habits and behaviors that are life-changing and sustainable.

How much does it cost to go to a fat camp?

Weekly costs for stays at "Fat Camps" for adults range between $3,000 and $5,000 USD on average, and this can vary depending upon amenities and additional add-on fees/surcharges (many of which are not advertised on their marketing materials or websites). Some high-end resort-style programs with spa packages can run as high as $15,000 per week. In some cases, a lower weekly rate can be achieved if your stay is extended for several weeks or more. Lastly, some places (such as Weight Crafters) offer discounts for various members of the community.

At Weight Crafters, we provide all-inclusive rates - There are no hidden fees or charges that are not listed on our site, aside from gratuities which depend entirely upon the satisfaction and generosity of the individual client.

Does insurance cover any of the costs associated with attending a residential fat camp for adults and seniors?

There are some cases in which certain insurance companies - or self-funded corporations that provide health insurance to their employees - will agree to pay for limited costs associated with weight loss programs. However; in most cases, insurance companies will not pay for expenses associated with a non-medical-based residential weight loss camp. Even in those cases where you attend medical-based programs, the typical amount covered tends to be very limited. This would be a question to ask your health insurance provider directly.

Does Weight Crafters provide financing options for clients?

Typically, Fat Camp style programs do not provide the financing for their clients, but instead refer you to a 3rd party financing company - usually through a link on their webpage. There are a few different financing companies out there that focus on this industry. We do not recommend these financing options to our clientele, primarily because their interest rates and terms are not ideal compared with a personal loan from a bank or credit union. We accept personal checks, credit cards and cash, and recommend that you reach out to your bank or credit union to see what options are available to you in order to self-finance your stay. The interest rates are usually much, much better than 3rd party financing companies.

How much weight can you lose at a Fat Camp Residential Program?

This question, when isolated to that one specific point, is often asked inappropriately because it only focuses on one outcome and not on the reality of what the goals of a Fat Camp Program actually are. Weight Loss during your stay is not the number one priority of any legitimate program that understands fitness, nutrition and overall wellness. The appropriate questions to ask are:

  • How much body fat can I reduce over a period of time?
  • How much lean muscle can I build over a period of time?
  • How many inches of mass can I deduct over a period of time?
  • How much inflammation can I reduce over a period of time?
  • How much can I improve my cardio, my strength, my endurance, my flexibility and mobility over a period of time?
  • How much weight can be lost over a period of time?
  • Will I be able to maintain my progress when I return home?
  • Etc.

The focus is not just on losing weight at the program, but to build the skills, knowledge, discipline and will to live a healthy and fit lifestyle when you leave the Weight Loss or Fat Camp program. Each person is different and so their results will be different. In most cases, the determination of the client and their ability to work hard and focus is the main factor. In other cases, they may be limited by hormonal issues, physical limitations or emotional disorders.

The focus here at Weight Crafters is to provide the tools, the education and the support to accomplish your goals. No program can tell you with certainty what your outcome will be - and if they imply that they can, then you probably want to move on to the next place, in our humble opinion.

What to expect at Weight Crafters

A typical day at fat camp consists of active (e.g., sports and fitness) and leisure time (e.g., nutrition, therapeutic massage, beach walks) as well as three delicious, properly portioned meals every day (with the exception of Sundays).

Exercise time is split into two sessions - morning and afternoon - and activities vary daily depending on your age, physical needs and the interests of the group. [2] Weight Crafters is not designed to be a military boot camp or fat farm; you will be working out, but not overworked. We also offer a variety of low-impact exercises [3] such as beach fitness routines, swimming and more.

We perform a "before" and "after" weigh-in, complete with body measurements and (optional) pictures, as well as a fitness assessment to help you track your progress while at camp. Group nutritional and motivational coaching sessions are also optionally available, and designed to help you learn skills to help maintain a healthy lifestyle upon returning home.

Does fat camp work better for men or women?

Gender does play a role in your journey to a healthier weight - but the differences equal out over time. Studies have shown that men typically lose more weight in the first few weeks after starting a weight loss program. Over the longer term however, women will generally catch up. [4]

This is why it's crucially important that you think of your time at weight-loss camp as a jump start, rather than a quick fix. The habits, strength and motivation you build while you're here are going to keep you moving forward towards your goals in the coming months after you return home.

Am I too old to exercise and lose weight?

If you're over 50, you may have noticed that staying in shape brings new challenges. This is completely normal - but it's no reason to quit! On the contrary - maintaining a healthy weight and staying regularly active are the most powerful tools you have to limit the effects of age, and give yourself more years of quality time ahead. [5]

Is fat camp like boot camp in the military?

While it's true that our founder is a United States Marine Corps veteran, our fitness retreat is nothing like Parris Island. Nobody will scream in your face, or make you do push-ups and jumping jacks in the mud.

You aren't here to get toughened up for war - you're with us to have a good time while improving your health and hopefully starting down the path to a long-term healthier lifestyle. We do provide structure and support - but it's a completely different approach.

Am I too out of shape to participate?

The goal of a fat camp styled program is to help guests dealing with overweight or obesity challenges lose weight, raise their self-confidence, self esteem and self-image, and teach them healthy life skills and choices. [6] Generally speaking, we are here specifically to help out-of-shape people improve their health. Our team has the training and experience to assist clients with various physical limitation if need be.

This being said, there are certain health conditions which could prevent you from attending our program - or any residential weight loss program. If you have concerns, we welcome you to reach out and talk them over with us.

Is this like The Biggest Loser?

No, real life fat camps do not operate the way it was depicted on reality TV. Weight loss is a long-term commitment to your health and your future - not just a temporary mark on the scale.

At Weight Crafters we prioritize reducing body fat while preserving and building lean muscle. This approach means that while you will certainly see your overall weight decrease on the scale, the more important change will be how you look in the mirror and how much better you feel. [7] This is why we perform full body assessments, as well as before and after photos.

You'll appreciate coming home lighter, leaner, more flexible and stronger - and what you'll really love is how noticeable this change will be to your friends and co-workers back home.

We also won't purposely tempt you with cakes, cookies and snacks strategically placed in front of hidden cameras. We promise!

Will I be hungry at fat camp?

A common misconception about adult fat camp programs is that you'll spend 10 hours per day on a treadmill and be rewarded with tiny, bland meals that leave you starving. Nothing could be further from the truth!

At Weight Crafters, you'll be eating three substantial meals per day, prepared for you by our team. By choosing healthy ingredients and preparing delicious recipes, we make sure you feel satisfied while getting the proper portions for sustainable fitness activity and net weight reduction.

Can I really reverse diabetes by losing weight, or is that a myth?

The truth is, it depends. For most people recently diagnosed, type 2 diabetes can be reversed with significant weight loss. Your chances of full remission however, will vary depending on how long you've been diabetic and whether you can maintain a healthy body weight long-term.

The key to type 2 diabetes is your personal fat threshold - that is, the amount of fat your body can handle before insulin production begins to diminish. New research has shown that recently-diagnosed type 2 diabetics can experience a success rate of up to 90% in reversing the disease [8] if they lose enough weight to allow their insulin-producing beta cells to recover and begin functioning properly - but that weight loss must be maintained, or the disease will immediately re-surface.

Yes. And no. A large percentage of weight loss camps can provide predictable weight loss in a short timeframe - but many programs do not prepare campers to keep the weight off long term. The lasting effectiveness of your stay will depend on your own commitment, and the structure and mental training provided during your stay.

Are fat camps worth it?

Weight loss camp often costs more than stay-at-home options. But if you've struggled to maintain a healthy weight, attending a residential weight loss camp can give you a major boost and provide strong motivation to stay the course that you haven't found any other way. 

What is the most effective type of weight loss program?

The best weight loss program for you will depend on your individual needs. Universally however, a good weight loss program shoud be designed by experts, with a strong focus on balanced nutrition, regular exercise, long-term goals and accountability.

When was fat camp invented?

Modern-day weight loss camps are a very specialized form of health spa - a broad concept that has been evolving since our earliest recorded civilizations. The earliest "fat camps" in modern culture were actually multipurpose rehab centers, where the well-off could get away from the world to quit drinking, or smoking, or lose a few pounds.

In a nutshell, maintaining a healthy weight offers the following benefits:

  • Slowing or preventing the onset of Type 2 Diabetes
  • Improvement in Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Reduced joint pain and increased mobility


Weight loss is the main treatment for obesity.

There is substantial evidence that a 7-10% weight loss can prevent progression from pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes. A 5-15% weight reduction can also manage cardiovascular risk for diabetics. And even a 10% reduction in weight can in some cases reverse Type 2 Diabetes into full remission. [9]

Health risks are reduced, [10] fitness is improved, [11] and diabetes may be delayed with weight loss in overweight or obese people. People with osteoarthritis of the knee may benefit from it since it can reduce pain and increase mobility. Hypertension can decrease with weight loss.

Depression, stress, or boredom may contribute to weight gain, [12] and if this is the case, individuals are encouraged to seek medical attention. According to a 2010 study, dieters who had a full night's sleep lost twice as much weight as those with inadequate sleep. [13]

Over the long term, most dieters regain weight. [14] The Dietary Guidelines for Americans state that those who achieve and manage a healthy weight successfully do so by carefully consuming only the necessary number of calories and being physically active. [15]

Adopting a diet in which you consume fewer calories than you burn helps you lose weight. [16] Dietary and lifestyle changes must be permanent however, to make weight loss permanent. Counseling and exercise by themselves do not result in weight loss. Dieting alone can result in weight loss, but only combining diet with exercise provides the best results. [17]
