Fighting depression can be just as challenging as fighting obesity

If you suffer from depression, you know it can be one of the hardest obstacles in life to overcome.

Unfortunately, cases of depression are increasing. According to Columbia University, depression increased from 6.6% to 7.3% from 2005 to 2015 - with teens and young adults twice as likely to be effected.

There are many types of depression, including major depression, bipolar disorder, and situational depression - i.e. depressive lapses centered around events like divorce, loss of a job, a death in the family, etc.

While many forms of depression cannot be "cured" in the same way as you might treat a disease or injury, there are many ways to work through it.

The good news is, you don't have to find relief from depression exclusively in a prescription bottle.

Exercise is just as effective as prescription antidepressant drugs

While we wouldn't call it an outright "depression cure", exercise is easily one of the most powerful natural antidepressants you can use to improve your state of mind. In fact, research has shown that regular, brisk exercise has just as much antidepressant effect as many prescription medications.

If you're already taking anti-depressants, this effect can stack. This means that if your medication simply isn't cutting it, regular exercise will help you avoid increased dosages or taking multiple medications with unpleasant side-effects.

Get in shape to boost your body image and self esteem

Losing weight through regular exercise and a healthy diet is a genuine win-win for many people battling depression.

For some, negative body image and poor self esteem are the direct results of being out of shape. This leads to depression - or makes it worse - and that in turn hurts your motivation to make healthy nutritional and activity choices.

Depression and poor health often operate together in a vicious cycle. Getting in shape will help to defeat both!
